Mayor Election WASAGA BEACH 2010

Good Afternoon Everyone:

My name is Cal Patterson. I have been on Wasaga Beach Council for 19 years. The last 7 years as your Mayor. Which I consider an honor and a privilege. I was your Deputy Mayor for 6 years and your Councilor for 6 years. I am currently the Warden of Simcoe County for the 2010 year and I have been a member of Simcoe County Council for 13 years.

I am retired after 35 years in Senior Financial Management as a Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer or Controller. I know what it is like to struggle to meet a payroll or collect a difficult receivable. Whether it was a small operation or a large corporation I was responsible for the Financial Statements, the 5 & 10 year Forecast, the Budgets and the Business Plans. Now with Wasaga Beach we have professional staff with 2 professional accountants and experienced staff performing all the required financial work and now I only have to read and analyze the financial information to question and approve.

We have a tremendously talented staff and our great asset to the community.“I have the leadership skills, the Municipal Government experience and the Financial Business background and I take a business-like approach to all Town issues. I am confident that I am well qualified to be your Mayor for the next 4 years.

Let me tell you about myself:

I was born and raised in Collingwood. I have lived in Toronto, Trenton, Calgary and Moose Jaw before moving to Wasaga Beach in 1980. I have been a resident of Wasaga Beach for 30 years. My wife Debbie and I have raised 4 children, Becky, Carly, Bradley and Haley. We now have Haley’s husband Will and their son (our Grandson Gavin who is 6 months old). All 4 children were bussed and educated and Collingwood Collegiate, my old school. I retired in 2007 from CCL Container in Penetang where I was the Financial Controller for 18 years. This was 100 million dollar Company over 3 times the size of the Town of Wasaga Beach Annual Budget.

I have been involved in Wasaga Beach since the day I arrived back in 1980. Hopefully you will get a copy of my pamphlet as you come in. If not there will be one mailed to you. It will show my community involvement. I am not going into all that I have done in the Community but my family and I have devoted our time and effort to the youth and the betterment of Wasaga Beach. I was fortunate enough to be recognized as the Wasaga Beach Citizen of the Year in 1994 and my wife was recognized as Citizen of the Year in 2007. The Carly Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament has raised $550,000 in 13 years and all the money has gone back into the Community for the youth and youth facilities.

I ran for Mayor to make things happen in our Town. I believe we have been successful and accomplished a lot. "We are in Good Financial shape". The envy of many surrounding Communities. We started this term with 13 million in general reserves and will end this term with 13 million in General reserves and as I said earlier we have accomplished a lot. Reserve funds remain healthy even though Council approved an aggressive Capital Program. Council adopted a four year capital forecast and 10 year public works capital forecast that is fully financed and has been implementing the forecast with minor changes. Although residential building permits dropped in 2009, growth continued in a managed fashion above the average experienced by other municipalities in Simcoe County. Tax increases are at or slightly below inflation over the past 4 years and near the lowest in Simcoe County.

During this term we have accomplished:

  • Hired a new Treasurer, Fire Chief and a new Economic Development Officer
  • Continued Water and Sewer Development in the West End
  • Completed Road Widening and Sidewalks from Sunnidale to 45th Street
  • Several new Play Park Structures
  • A new Transit System to our Community
  • An Extensive Flood Remediation Program
  • New Water Meter Project (almost completed)
  • Wheeler Drain Improvement Program
  • Waterfront Splash Pad
  • Dog Park, BMX Bike Park and Skateboard Park
  • New Entrance to the Rec Plex (seem to take forever)
  • Retained 4 Doctors by moving them from East to West end
  • New Medical Blood Clinic
  • New Active Transportation Plan with several trails
  • Several road improvements all over town with the assistance of the Stimulus Funding
  • Community Health Center (tell background) Youth Center
  • Stonebridge Plaza, Wal-Mart, Boston Pizza, Swiss Chalet, KFC, Chinese Food and many more

My Vision for the future:

It’s a well balanced, full serviced community that meets the needs of our current and future residents, along with our valued tourists in support of our various businesses.

My Goals are:

  • A full recreational program for all ( We are well on our way)
  • Continue to expedite our own High School ( We have had very productive meetings with the School Board and with the Minister of Education, Minister Dombrosky just a couple of weeks ago
  • Continued priorities and concerns for our Fiscal Accountability
  • Continue to enhance and enforce our environmental protection
  • Implement a longer term approach to Economic Development in Partnership with Simcoe County and Lakehead University
  • Continue to pursue Traffic and Transportation Solutions - example River Road West Widening and sidewalks and Bike paths
  • The 12th Concession By-pass
  • Continue with water as a priority, Conservation “Quantity and Quality”. Responsibility for future generations
  • Controlled Residential Growth
  • ontinued Commercial Continue with water and sewer installation program when government funding is available
  • Restoration of our Beachfront (Ministry of Tourism and MNR) We want our Beach back
  • Creation of a Community Garden

To some people "Busy is a chore" To me it is a way of life and I thrive on it. I try to make a difference every day. I have worked hard all my life and I will continue put the same ethics into being your re-elected Mayor. I do not own a Business in Wasaga beach. I do not work for any Business in Wasaga Beach. Therefore, as your Mayor, I have no conflicts. I am a Cancer Survivor.

In my spare time. I am a volunteer with the Cancer Society as a Peer Support for those who have Colon Cancer and I mentor families to who have lost or losing their children to Cancer. I have been recognized by the Cancer Society twice, once for volunteering for 5 years and received a 5 year pin. The second time was my profile in the Ontario Cancer Care Annual Report for my mentoring over 40 matches.

I am confident, that I am again—ready---willing---healthy and able to do the job as your Mayor.

I AM ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT ON OCTOBER 25TH
